After the Train Leaves: An Archive of Goodbyes

Ellis has spent his entire high school career invisible—just the quiet yearbook photographer no one remembers, drifting through locker-lined halls with a vintage camera pressed to his eye. His only secret is the darkroom hidden behind the school bleachers, where an entire wall is covered with photographs of strangers saying goodbye at the town's single-platform train station. It is his silent archive of everyone who leaves, a catalog of departures collected since childhood to convince himself that staying still is the safest form of love. When he is assigned to guide new transfer student Micah through the maze of hallways, Ellis never expects Micah to follow him behind the bleachers, much less discover the wall. Micah, restless and carrying a box of unsent letters from a life uprooted, does not flinch at the display. Instead, he asks to be taken to the station. They begin chasing the 5:47 regional and the midnight sleeper together, their shoulders brushing in the camera's blind spot, the project shifting from documenting strangers to orbiting each other. But when Micah begins receiving letters with no return address, the ritual fractures. Ellis must decide whether to keep his finger pressed on the capture button—or to set the camera down and pull Micah from the edge of the platform before the train arrives.
