ComicDescription

When reserved transfer student Ellis Ward is reluctantly paired with the quiet, unapproachable photographer Ciarán Oakes for orientation at Ridgemont High, he expects nothing but awkward silences and a swift return to anonymity. The last thing either of them is prepared for is stumbling upon an abandoned darkroom tucked beneath the rusting iron bones of the station overpass. Inside, suspended from twine and pinned across every wall, they find a sprawling project no one was ever meant to see: hundreds of candid photographs capturing every goodbye the platform has ever witnessed. A mother releasing her son's hand, a lover turning away, a father wiping his eyes behind a pillar. Each frame is soaked in the ache of departure and the ghost of an unspoken confession. Assigned by their curious literature teacher to piece together the story behind the images, Ellis and Ciarán trace the work back to Sasha Vane, a former Ridgemont student who vanished without a trace two years before, leaving behind nothing but the darkroom and a single note promising to eventually return for one last photograph. As their afternoons dissolve into shared silences and almost-touches beneath the flickering station lights, the photographs become a language neither of them knows how to speak aloud. Ciarán, who has spent his entire life watching the world through a viewfinder, finds himself increasingly unable to keep Ellis out of frame. And Ellis, who came to this town expecting to leave it behind, begins to dread the day his own train will pull into the station. But when the investigation unearths a photograph dated only weeks ago — proof that Sasha may still be nearby — their quiet search transforms into something more urgent. Ghosts are not supposed to still be taking pictures. As the autumn semester draws to a close and the date of Ellis's departure solidifies on a ticket in his pocket, Ciarán must make an impossible choice: remain the observer he has always been, or finally step into the frame and ask someone to stay. Because sometimes the most important photographs are not the ones you take, but the ones you refuse to let become another goodbye on the darkroom wall.
