After the Train Leaves the Station Keeps Every Goodbye

When Kai transfers mid-semester to Maple Creek, a sleepy town where the station clock always runs three minutes slow, he expects nothing but the familiar ache of another goodbye he did not choose. Assigned to show him around is Eli, a quiet boy who speaks through the shutter of an old film camera, collecting silences the way the tracks collect rain. Eli never explains why he is drawn to the station after school, but Kai follows the pull anyway. Together they stumble upon a locked cabinet in the disused waiting room, crammed with hundreds of Polaroid photographs, each one capturing a farewell at the exact same platform. The images are anonymous but agonizingly intimate: a hand releasing another hand, a coat collar turned against the wind, a blurred face through a train window. The more they unearth, the more they realize the collection spans decades and seems to be waiting for a final photograph: the goodbye neither of them is ready to name. As Kai's uncertain past catches up with him and the urge to run bleeds into every frame, the two boys must decide whether they are cataloguing an ending or, for the first time, learning how to stay.
