The Narrow Dark

When the colony ship Errant Crown breaks apart in deep space, astrogator Valen Kask and structural engineer Miran Holt are the only survivors to reach an escape pod. The capsule is barely large enough for one. The CO2 scrubber is failing. The hull is bleeding heat into the void. And the two men inside have not spoken a civil word in fourteen years — not since the Huygens Gate disaster, when their shared mentor Aldric Venn died in a depressurised module and each blamed the other for the death. Trapped in the narrowing pocket of cold air with jagged suit punctures, a single medkit, and dwindling oxygen pressure stripping every barricade of professionalism, they are forced to triage wounds and share body heat against the creeping hypothermia. Claustrophobia turns to raw accusation, accusation turns to confession, and the fourteen-year silence finally cracks open around a long-buried secret: the anomaly report Miran falsified to spare Valen's career. What emerges from the darkness of the failing pod is not hatred but something far more dangerous — a love too fierce to name, forged in the tight space between a dying man's laughter and the cold mathematics of unforgivable sacrifice. Before the rescue buoy arrives, two broken men will be moulded together by survival, their heartbeats syncing into a single frayed rhythm. But the pod door opening means facing a world that will demand answers for the lie that bound them — and the truth may cost them everything they have just found.
