Shared Air

Deep-space astronauts Aris Thorne and Kael Voss, once the rival twin suns of their training cohort, become the sole survivors when Aurora Station implodes without warning. Crammed into a single failing escape pod whose life support stutters with every compromised seal, they have nothing but recycled air and a decade of suppressed history crowding the hull: a sabotaged simulation that stole Aris's command slot, a night before launch they have both erased from official logs but not from the way their hands still know where the other's bruises hide, and a competition for Commander Sterling's approval that calcified into something neither would name. As oxygen dwindles and the pod drifts through a debris field of everything they built together, forced proximity becomes a fracture line that pries open every wound they have welded shut. To survive the slow decompression of both pod and pride, they must stop using their history as a weapon and learn to breathe in tandem—even if it means admitting that the thing they have called hatred has always been the gravity that keeps them from drifting apart. When rescue finally arrives, a recovered transmission reveals the station's destruction may not have been an accident, and someone out there does not want the two survivors comparing notes.
